Insecurity: Presidency approves fresh purchase of air assets to combat terrorists

President Bola Tinubu has approved the purchase of new fleets of fighter jets as part of his ongoing effort to confront insecurity in all nooks and crannies of the country.

Fielding questions from reporters after a closed-door meeting with the President on Friday, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, disclosed that the purpose of the meeting centred on the rising tide of terrorism and banditry in the country and around its borders.

He argued that the recent waves of insecurity in the country may not be unconnected with the global push by terrorists around the Sahel region of West Africa due to the porous nature of Nigerian borders, while assuring that the Nigerian Army will not relent in its effort to nip terrorism in the bud.

”Our meeting today is just to review the entire security situation in the country. The President is concerned about what is going on, and we assured him that we are on top of our game and working extremely hard. What has happened recently is that there is a global push by terrorists all over the Sahel area, and that pressure is coming to Nigeria because of the nature of our borders, ” he said.

The CDS said the President has ordered the army to collaborate with State Governors as well as sister countries and devise means to checkmate cross-border attacks

”The president has told us to intensify our effort, collaborate with State Governors and our sister countries, because it is the porous nature of our borders that is aggravating our own issues on the ground. Equipment has been bought, and the President has given us appr
oval for air assets and other aspects of security,” Christopher added.

General Christopher then appealed to Nigeria to ignore fake news that is being spread on social media, saying: We are appealing to Nigerians not to be tired and wary of fake news. There is a lot of fake news being spread out making it look as though the government is not doing enough to fight insecurity. Most of the videos being circulated are videos from other countries or old videos.

Then you begin to wonder why some individuals are happy when things go bad in their country. If Nigeria is attacked today, we will all be moved out, so we must cooperate with members of the armed forces and other security agencies. If you see anything wrong going on somewhere, report it, including our personnel

We are shaming those naysayers who don’t mean well for us.
