Jonathan’s action saved Nigeria, Africa from crisis, says Ouattara
From Mohammed Abubakar, Abuja He believed that President Jonathan’s action would remain a reference point to other leaders in the continent.
Addressing State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ouattara, who eulogized him on his conduct before, during and after the elections, said by this action, he had saved the country and Africa of crisis that would have engulfed the nation.
Ouattara commended Jonathan for the quality leadership he had provided over the years, recalling that about five years ago Cote D’ Ivoire had elections, which he won, but the former President refused to vacate office, which lead to civil war in the country. “About 3,000 people were killed.
We were under protection of the United Nations at a hotel for four and a half months. Sometimes without food because the hotel was guided by the ex-President’s loyalists. We could not leave the place until the former President was caught.
“I narrated this to show that what happened in Nigeria is a lesson to all of us. I think avoiding violence, avoiding civil war when we have elections in Africa should be our utmost objective because people are more important than power.
“Mr. President, my good friend, I’m not surprised about what you did and I want to congratulate you, congratulate the Nigerian people, congratulate the President-elect because this election in Nigeria is a legacy for other African countries and I think we owe you a lot in ECOWAS.”
He recalled for two years when he was the chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) “and we had to deal with very difficult issues like the wars in Northern Mali, terrorist attacks in Northern Nigeria, the crisis in Guinea Bissau, the problems in Togo, you were always there for us.
You are a West African before being a Nigerian and we thank you for what you did for West Africa. “And we also to set up the partnership agreement with the European Union together.
Only West Africa has been able to do this. My brother, you have shown support to me during the difficult years I went through, you’ve shown friendship to me all these years and so I want to tell you thank you.”
