Journalists accuse Niger govt officials of restricting information

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),Niger State Council has accused the state government officials of blocking its members from obtaining information on its programme and policies.

NUJ chairman, Comrade Abu Nmodu, expressed the concern when he lead the executive council members on a congratulatory visit to the new General Manager of Radio Niger, Mohammed Kolo.

Nmodu frowned that despite the frantic efforts of governor Umaru Bago to develop the state, limited access to government officials was hindering the effective information dissemination at all levels of governance.

The NUJ boss enjoined government functionaries to see journalists as partners in progress and adopt a coordinated approach to access, enabling newsmen to build their image efficiently.

He promised the new General Manager of Radio Niger of the union’s support and cooperation at all times.

The NUJ Chairman revealed the union’s efforts to curb quackery in the profession, saying that patronage by officials encourages individuals to engage in unprofessional journalism.

He advised the public to report such cases to the union.

In his remarks, the General Manager, Radio Niger, Mohammed Kolo, while appreciating the NUJ delegation, stressed the need for government to involve NUJ and RATTAWU in the media house recruitments to ensure professionalism.

Kolo urged NUJ to tackle quackery in the profession.
