Lagos State University (LASU) on Thursday declared its support for the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Is-haq Oloyede, amid mounting calls for his resignation following the technical failure that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
LASU, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, described Oloyede as a “beacon of integrity,” and praised his decision to take full responsibility for the setback, which affected over 379,000 candidates across 157 centres in Lagos and the South-East.
“The candid admission of technical failures that affected the examination and his decision to take full responsibility for the setback are precisely why Lagos State University expresses its unwavering support for the Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede,” the statement read.
Oloyede, during a press conference on Wednesday, openly accepted responsibility for the disruptions caused by a technical failure and human errors in 157 centres in Lagos and Owerri zones.
Oloyede then announced that candidates affected by the technical glitch in 157 centres will be required to retake their 2025 UTME starting from Friday, May 16, 2025.
According to him, the board has “decided that all the candidates affected in the 157 centres out of 882 centres will be contacted to retake their examinations starting from Friday, May 16, 2025.”
Oloyede noted that these candidates are to be contacted through text messages addressed to their registered phone numbers, their email addresses, their profiles and phone calls by JAMB.
LASU described Oloyede’s public admission and swift remedial action as a display of rare “courage and humility,” noting that “rather than deflecting blame, Oloyede took full responsibility and immediately ordered a retake for all affected candidates to restore confidence in the process.”
“Lagos State University stands solidly with Prof. Oloyede affirming not only his courage and humility in this testing time but also the depth of character cum integrity that has become the hallmarks on his glittering career as a public servant.
“Indeed, his decision to subject the process to an internal technical review and admit shortcomings reflects his exceptional character and demonstrates a kind of leadership that is scarce in the Nigerian public space.”
