Lawmaker Berates House Of Rep Over Kogi Assembly Dispute

The new majority leader of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Friday Sani Makama, has berated the House of Representatives for embarking on a wild goose chase in Kogi, by claiming to be investigating the crises in the State Assembly.

Makama who was speaker Pro Tempore during the sitting where former Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Momoh Jimoh Lawal was impeached, said the House of Representatives has no power to investigate the House of Assembly of any State.

Speaking with The Guardian the lawmaker said any matter for investigation solely lies with security agencies in the country. According to him, “the oversight function of the National Assembly does not include the investigation of state House of Assembly just like the State House of Assembly has no power to investigate the Local Government legislative council.

“There is no part of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that empowers them to investigate a State Assembly and I think they have really gone against morals, rules, procedures and that will not stand. The investigating committee has no power to resolve or pass judgment on the State House of Assembly. It is illegal,” he said.

He disclosed that before the coming of the committee, the leadership of the House of Assembly had filed a case at the Federal High Court, challenging the powers of the National Assembly to set up an investigation committee on Kogi.

“The court didn’t waste time in granting an injunction stopping them from taking further action until the substantive suit before the court was heard,” he noted. Continuing he said it was unfortunate they went ahead to conduct what they called investigation into Kogi State House of Assembly because of the special interest they have in the matter.

He averred that the investigation would have no binding force, adding that the era when the National Assembly would arrogate powers they do not have is gone.
