One person has been confirmed dead, and two others injured in an auto crash involving a MAN diesel truck with registration number LSR 977 XW. The truck, driven by one Dapo Muyideen Ajala, whose address remains unknown, reportedly overturned at Ido Awele along Lisa at about 11:45 p.m. on February 24.

The Guardian learnt that the truck, loaded with sharp sand, was en route from Lisa to Itoki with three loaders on board. The loaders, identified as Iliasu Adamu, 35, Iliasu Balla, 32, and Sulaimon Mustapha, 28, work at Itoki Tipper Garage and reside in the same neighbourhood.

According to a statement by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, the driver lost control of the truck while descending a hill at Odo Awela, causing the vehicle to tumble and trap the loaders beneath.

“The victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Faith Hospital, Ijoko, for emergency treatment,” Odutola said. “Tragically, Sulaimon Mustapha was later confirmed dead, and his remains have been handed over to his family for burial in line with Islamic rites. The other two victims are still receiving medical care.”

The police spokesperson revealed that efforts are underway to apprehend the driver, who fled the scene. Meanwhile, traffic police have cleared the wreckage, towing the vehicle for inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). She added that a preliminary investigation by the Motor Traffic Division is ongoing, with further updates to be provided to the public.

The Ogun State Police Command urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on hilly roads, and ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition to prevent similar tragedies.
