FG, Senate backs initiative to recycle five million tonnes of plastics annually

The Senate has endorsed ongoing moves by the 5BEE Nigeria Initiative to mobilize 50 million Nigerians to recycle 5 million tons of plastic annually in the country.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Seriake Dickson stated that the initiative reflects the Senate’s commitment to advancing environmental sustainability.

He added that the 5BEE Nigeria Initiative will not only mitigate the effects of plastic pollution but empower millions of Nigerians to take responsibility for their environment.

Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, remarked that 5BEE Nigeria is a landmark initiative that puts the power of change in the hands of our citizens adding by addressing plastic pollution and fostering eco-friendly practices, this program is an essential step toward creating a sustainable future for Nigeria.

She further emphasized that the scale of the 5BEE Nigeria Initiative is unprecedented. Its focus on empowering individuals and communities is essential for creating long-lasting environmental change.

Mr Wilkinson Agih, the Lead Climate Finance and Circular Economy Advisor, in a statement Wednesday emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “5BEE Nigeria is more than a recycling campaign; it is a movement that fosters community collaboration, innovation, and long-term sustainability. By engaging millions of Nigerians, we can create a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship.”

The initiative will educate and equip 50 million Nigerians with the knowledge and tools needed to reduce waste, recycle plastics, and promote sustainable practices.

Spanning all 36 states and the FCT, the program will activate grassroots recycling campaigns, creating cleaner and healthier communities.

This citizen-driven recycling campaign is a significant step forward in addressing the country’s plastic pollution crisis while promoting responsible consumption and sustainable development.

5BEE Nigeria aims to serve as a transformative platform committed to achieving a cleaner, greener nation through grassroots engagement and innovative waste management solutions.

The initiative seeks to create a new generation of empowered Eco-Citizens who will champion environmental sustainability and drive change across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
