A delegation of parliamentarians and environmentalists from Liberia has sought collaboration with Nigeria on strategies to combat the effects of climate change, which continue to pose significant environmental challenges globally.
The delegation, led by Ernest Manseah Snr, held separate sessions with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Ecology and Climate Change on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting with the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, chaired by Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West), Manseah described Nigeria as a leader in climate change mitigation and a model for other nations.
“We have come to learn from you, distinguished members of this committee, on how Nigeria has been mitigating the effects of climate change,” he said.
“In Liberia, we are considering the establishment of a Climate Fund, but beyond funding, we want to tap into Nigeria’s strategies for tackling environmental challenges.”
In response, Senator Dickson emphasized the importance of African countries working together to address the growing climate crisis.
“Climate change is a major challenge that requires collective efforts across Africa,” he said.
“Here in Nigeria, we have a Climate Change Act—the first of its kind in Africa—which provides legal backing for mitigation measures. This makes Nigeria one of the leading nations in addressing climate challenges.”
He welcomed the collaboration and expressed Nigeria’s willingness to visit Liberia to strengthen the partnership.
Other committee members, including Senate Minority Whip Osita Ngwu (Enugu West), Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), and Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), commended the Liberian delegation for the initiative. They advocated for a broader partnership that includes other African nations.
The delegation later proceeded to the House of Representatives Committee on Ecology and Climate Change for a similar engagement.
The discussions underscored the need for a unified African approach to climate change, leveraging Nigeria’s experience to help other nations develop effective policies and mitigation strategies.
The proposed collaboration is expected to enhance knowledge sharing, policy development, and climate resilience efforts in the region.
