Court sentences carpenter to two weeks community service for stealing neighbour’s household items

A 28-year-old carpenter, Godwin Tertesey was on Thursday sentenced by a Senior Magistrates Court, Karu, Abuja, to two weeks community service for stealing his neighbour’s household items.

The judge, Anwar Kazaure also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N450,000 to the complainant and warned him to desist from committing crimes.

The convict who resides at Karu had pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of joint acts, house breaking, criminal trespass and theft.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Olarewaju Osho told the court that the complainant, Mr. Joseph Azege of same address with the convict reported the matter at the Karu police station on Oct. 5.

According to him, the complainant had alleged that the convict jointly conspired with one other suspect at large, entered his apartment and stole some items.

He said the items stolen include, one mattress, one stove, sets of pots, plates, chairs and a box containing other materials.

Osho added that the convict went and sold the items to his fellow conspirators now at large at the rate of N20,000, and they shared the proceeds.

He said the offense contravened sections 79, 353, 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
