Democracy Day: Alia cautions against unverified utterances

Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has criticized certain religious leaders in the state for allegedly inciting chaos through unsubstantiated statements. Speaking at the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, which was held in Makurdi on Thursday, the governor referred to these leaders as “religious bandits.”

According to Governor Alia, these religious leaders contribute to the problem through their rhetoric, often making unverified statements and distorting facts. He emphasized the importance of responsible speech and urged religious leaders to speak only about what they know and can verify.

“There are some religious leaders; I call them ‘religious bandits,’ who are fueling the bad situation we are experiencing here. And how do they support that? By their rhetoric. If you do not have the facts about Benue and Nigeria, shut up. Don’t just say something because you have the holy altar and oil to speak. Speak what you know and what can be verified.”

Alia called on citizens to develop a positive mindset and work collectively towards the advancement of Benue State and Nigeria as a nation. He stressed the significance of unity, sacrifice, and collaborative efforts in overcoming obstacles and achieving lasting peace.

The governor paid tribute to the heroes of democracy, both living and deceased, who fought for Nigeria’s independence and democratic governance. He observed a minute of silence in their honour.

The governor also spoke on the security challenges currently facing Benue State, emphasizing the need for a collective response to address these issues. He urged traditional and religious leaders to promote peace and stability while condemning those who fuel conflict and unrest.

“My dear people of Benue State, as we commemorate this significant day, let it serve as a moment of reflection for all of us. It is not yet Uhuru,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, as part of the events marking the celebrations, several APC groups present at the occasion endorsed the president and the governor for the 2027 election, vowing to stand behind them to achieve their second-term ambitions.

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue State, Benjamin Omale, APC support groups led by Moses Abuku, and NLC representative Comrade Omaja Aloy, who spoke at the democracy solidarity rally, all commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia, whom they said have improved the lives of the people.
