Farmer killed days after receiving compensation for destroyed crops in Ondo
The agrarian community of Uba Oka-Akoko was thrown into a state of mourning, at the weekend, following the killing of a farmer, Sunday Ayeni, by unknown assailants.
The body of the deceased farmer was discovered on his farm a few days after receiving financial compensation for the destruction of his crops by the cows of a herder.
The late farmer, who did not return home when he left for his farm a few days ago, had the crops on his farm destroyed by cows, after which the situation was handled by community leaders as well as security agents.
Following the mediation, the herder was made to pay an undisclosed amount to the late farmer as compensation.
According to a resident of the community who identified himself as Sola, “The late farmer went to the farm with his dog as usual yesterday (Saturday), but he did not come on time.
“So this led to a search party who discovered his lifeless body in a pool of blood with his dog and cutlass beside him. He was stabbed and macheted by the assailants.”
Also, a community leader in the area, Mr. Pius Imoru, who described the incident as sad and wicked, stated that the community has been mourning the deceased and called on the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators.
“Farmers in Uba Oka Akoko are now scared of going to their farms because of herdsmen attacks. We want the government and the security agencies in the state to look into the security situation in our area,” the community leader appealed.
When contacted, the state police public relations officer, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said she was yet to be briefed about the incident at press time.
