The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Rivers State Command has launched a special patrol operation to ensure a safe and seamless Easter holiday for residents.
According to a statement signed by Ekwere, Sector Public Education Officer (SPEO), for Sector Commander Inyang Umoh, over 1,000 personnel, comprising Regular and Special Marshals, 16 patrol vans, and one heavy-duty tow truck, have been deployed statewide.
The operation, Ekwere revealed, started on Wednesday, April 16, and will run through April 23. It is aimed at reducing road traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries.
He noted that key aspects of the operation include traffic control at critical areas, real-time monitoring, and prompt response to emergencies.
He added that a situation room has been set up at the State Headquarters to facilitate coordination and response.
He said that during the operation, FRSC personnel will target various offenses, including overspeeding, dangerous driving, improper overtaking, lane indiscipline, road obstructions, phone use while driving, overloading, and seatbelt and child restraint law violations.
Other focus areas include a lack of passenger manifests, operation of mechanically unfit vehicles, and non-compliance with safety regulations.
“Additional partners include National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), state traffic management agencies, non-governmental organizations, ambulance service providers, and the Federal Fire Service,” he said.
