The Citizens Led Engagements on Judicial Accountability in Post-Election Justice, delivery in Nigeria (CLEAP Justice), project of ActionAid Nigeria organised a two-day programme to mobilise influencer voices on social media for justice and accountability.
Speaking during the programme at Best Western Hotel (BWC), Victoria Island, Governance Specialist, ActionAid, Nigeria, Judith Gbegidi, said as part of the call for judicial reforms ahead of 2027 General Elections, the CLEAP Justice team organised a two-day strategic engagement with journalists and influencers with large followers on social media in Lagos State in a view to raising public awareness about the need for judicial reform and to spotlight the key recommendations made by the Independent Judicial Accountability Panel (IJAP) that is under the CLEAP Justice project.
“Recent trends have shown that media influence both traditional and social media continues to shape public discourse and drive change across the world.”
We are therefore engaging young influencers who could bring out the message around civic education and push it out in their own way so that other people would listen to them and understand civic education. We are working with a technical working group that transitioned to IJAP. We are looking broadly outside the post-election judiciary to move to general judiciary accountability itself and how the judiciary can be held accountable” she said.
Coordinator, CLEAP Justice, ActionAid, Adesuwa Iluobe said through influencers in Kano, Akwa-Ibom, Enugu a lot of people have been reached and it is now the turn of Lagos. She disclosed that CLEAP Justice has been able to summarise electoral acts, the constitution and electoral tribunal processes and still doing more.
She said more than 86,000 people have been reached and feedback got from about 28,000 people who expressed happiness and approval at what is being done.
Programme Assistant, ActionAid, Oyin Bamigbaye said creation of IJAP could be premised on making the judiciary to minimise contradictory judgment which is reducing the citizens trust in the judiciary and follow set precedents.
