Kano govt intensifies efforts to achieve open defecation-free status

The Kano State government is making significant progress in its campaigns to stop open defecation across the state. It has added six more local councils to the list of areas on the road to becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF).

Mustapha Muhammad, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, stated that 15 local councils have been successful in this drive, bringing the total to 26 councils that are conscious of open defecation and eligible to receive certificates of attaining ODF status.

The government, in partnership with UNICEF, has distributed materials to communicate and raise awareness about the dangers of open defecation. These materials include information, education, and communication materials, improved latrine covers, Tippy Tap sanitisers, and public enlightenment banners.

The government, through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) under the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, is actively working towards achieving the goals of the Open Defecation Free campaigns.

Speaking with journalists, the Managing Director of RUWASA, Shamwilu Abdulkadir Isa, emphasised the importance of raising awareness to prevent outbreaks of water-related diseases and diseases associated with improper defecation.

The Managing Director stressed that the ODF campaigns require commitment and extensive awareness efforts to reach rural and urban areas. He highlighted the need for a vigorous campaign involving all stakeholders.

The government has distributed sustainable and accessible sanitation and hygiene products called SATO to the 15 local councils classified as ODF. The government has also targeted areas such as motor parks, Tsangaya schools, and markets for intervention.

Additionally, the six local councils set to attain Open Defecation Free status have received funding from the government.

These six councils are Sumaila, Tudun Wada, Doguwa, Tofa, Bunkure, and GarunMalam. It is expected that these councils will soon be added to the list of Open Defecation Free areas.
