LAUTECH, police probe student’s death off-campus

The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has said it is working closely with the police to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its students, Ridwan Oladipupo, a 300-level student of Agricultural Engineering, who died under mysterious circumstances off-campus.

In a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Mrs Olayinka Balogun, on Wednesday, the university expressed sadness over the tragic loss and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure that the truth is uncovered.

“The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso has unofficially learnt about the demise of Mr. Ridwan Oladipupo, a 300-level student of Agricultural Engineering in the Institution,” the Registrar stated.

According to the statement, the deceased reportedly left his off-campus hostel on Lawyer Ahmed Street, Ogbomoso, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, informing his roommates that he was going to study, without disclosing his destination.

On the following day, June 25, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs was contacted by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Owode Division regarding the discovery of a corpse in front of Nurudeen Grammar School, along Under-G road in Ogbomoso. At the time, the identity of the deceased could not be confirmed by local residents or students, and the police subsequently moved the body to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital mortuary.

“It was gathered that the deceased’s father showed up at his off-campus hostel on Sunday, 29th June 2025, accompanied by a police officer. The occupants of the hostel were interrogated, but until now, there is still no official representation before the university,” Balogun said.

While noting that LAUTECH is a non-residential university, she explained that the institution operates a security network in collaboration with relevant agencies to patrol and monitor student-dominated off-campus areas every night.

Balogun said the university would refrain from making further comments so as not to jeopardise ongoing police investigations but assured the public that LAUTECH is committed to uncovering the truth.

“The University is saddened by the death of the student,” she said. “The matter is before the Owode Division of the Nigerian Police Force, and the University will not want to jeopardise police investigation.”

The case continues to generate concern among students and residents in Ogbomoso, as the community awaits more clarity from the ongoing investigation.
