The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for an investigation into the death of a Nigerian citizen, Daniel Eheri, who reportedly died in police custody in Luxembourg.
NiDCOM said it is working with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium to press for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Eheri’s death.
NIDCOM spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun said in a statement on Wednesday that the commission will work with the Nigerian Embassy in that country to demand a thorough investigation and that justice is served.
The call for a probe follows a petition from the Nigerian community in Luxembourg, which alleged that Eheri was arrested on February 10, 2025, while carrying food items and was confirmed dead by February 11. The community claims Luxembourg police have failed to provide any explanation for the death.
The petition in question, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was purportedly signed by Sunday Adekolu, the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, and addressed to Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
The petition claims that Eheri was found dead the next day after being taken into custody by Luxembourg police on February 10, 2025, while in possession of food. The letter raised concerns over the lack of explanation by Luxembourg authorities regarding the circumstances of his death.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder,” Adekolu stated. “
Adekolu demanded that the Nigerian government step in and make sure the issue is not disregarded. “To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case,” he said.
He added that Nigeria’s ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Chiedu Onowu, whose diplomatic area of responsibility includes Luxembourg, had sent two letters about the case but had not heard back.
“The ambassador’s efforts were rebuffed, as there had been no official response to his letters on the matter,” Adekolu said.
But Adekolu asked NiDCOM for immediate help in order to make the case’s facts clear and force the Luxembourg police to perform an autopsy.
“We, the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, do hereby seek your urgent assistance on the matter, to put records in right perspectives, to persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale into conducting autopsy on the remains of EHERI DANIEL, to sensitise the Luxembourg Police on matters that can be done to prevent a re-occurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg in the future.”
