Northern hunters must stop moving to South with dangerous weapons – Kano Reps

A member of the House of Representatives from Kano, Alhassan Kabiru Rirum, has cautioned local hunters from his constituency from hunting in the southern part of the country.

Rirum insisted that the conveyance of dangerous local weapons from the North to hunt in the South is capable of provoking violence.

The member, representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal constituency of Kano State, gave the caution on Thursday when he paid a condolence visit to the families of 16 hunters killed in Uromi, Edo State.

Rirum, a former speaker, Kano state House of Assembly, who personally led party loyalists to Torankawa village, Bunkure local government area of Kano on sympathy, emphasised that the movement of hunters within the region is no longer fashionable in the present day.

According to the lawmaker, “The present-day Nigeria requires people doing businesses or traditions that would not create any suspicion that might result in uncertainties.”

The Aniebama-led faction NNPP member, who subsequently donated N5 million naira to bereaved families, pledged to sponsor a bill at the floor of the green chamber to address the predicament of the local hunters and host community to prevent future occurrences.

He said, “Carrying dangerous Weapons and moving around with them from one end to another in this sensitive period of Insecurity in the land will surely send a bad signal and result in causing chaos, therefore, our hunters should henceforth stop it.

“Just recently, over 30 of my Rano Hometown Hunters were apprehended in Ondo State, I had to personally go and see the Governor and show every evidence that they are not Criminals before he worked out for their release.

“If those people in Ondo who arrested our Rano Hunters were as senseless as those of Uromi, what do you think would have happened? The story would have been different by now.”

Factional NNPP Chairman in Kano, Senator Masaud Jibrin Eldoguwa, said he was touched by what had happened, but it should serve as a lesson to guide against the reoccurrence of such heinous crimes.

Eldoguwa said that sooner than later, the work will start on the School that is promised to be built, adding that the aim was to give the children of those killed hope that they are not neglected.

Governor Monday Akpoholo of Edo State, three weeks ago, led top members of his cabinet on a condolence visit to the victims’ families in Torankawa village, where he pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Kano State Government has constituted a fact-finding mission led by Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to Edo State to negotiate compensation for the families of the victims.
