Omokri counters Rufai Oseni, backs Abati on EndSARS coverage

Former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri Friday said Arise TV anchor Oseni Rufai’s claim that only the Lagos-based broadcaster televised the events that led to the shooting of unarmed protesters at Lekki Toll Gate in October 2020 by the Nigerian soldiers was not true.

Oseni had alleged that AriseTV was the only station that broadcast the incidents leading up to the #LekkiMassacre #EndSARS affair live during the Morning Show on September 8, 2023.

The show anchor was quickly corrected by his co-host, Dr. Reuben Abati, who told him that other stations covered the shootings.

“Let’s not exaggerate,” Abati said on the show.

An unseemly argument ensued on the live programme, which ended with Dr. Abati asking Rufai to be moderate and then calling an abrupt commercial break.

Oseni, not satisfied with Abati’s correction went on the X, formerly known Twitter, to accuse a certain media person, whom he refused to name, of being a liar and insisted that only AriseTV broadcast live on that day.

Omokri, however, backed Abati’s claim that other television stations broadcast the incident.

The former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan produced video evidence of Channels TV broadcasting live on the days of the incident in question (October 20 and 21, 2020), with sounds of gunshots audible in the background as the live footage, with a Channels correspondent ran.
