Police hold peace meeting over farmers-herders clashes in Ogun

Stakeholders during the meeting

In a bid to address the recurring cases of crop destruction and cattle killings stemming from farmer-herder disputes in Olugbo and neighbouring villages, the Ogun State Police Command has convened a security meeting with key stakeholders.

The meeting, organised by the Odeda Division, was held on February 4 at the Olugbo Police Outstation, following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Dr Lanre Ogunlowo.

The aim was to engage various ethnic groups in dialogue to foster mutual understanding, prevent hostility, and promote peaceful coexistence.

Representatives at the meeting included the Odeda Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Coordinator, traditional leaders, members of the Igede Farmers Group, Igbo and Fulani communities, youth leaders from villages such as Lufodo, Baale, and Arege, as well as members of the Agbekoya Group, vigilante groups, and local hunters.

After extensive deliberations, all parties agreed to encourage their followers to embrace peace and tolerance.

Community members were also urged to promptly report disputes to the police or nearby security outfits to prevent escalation.

The police assured stakeholders of their commitment to swift intervention in disputes and reiterated their dedication to maintaining peace and security in the region.

Participants commended the proactive steps the police took and pledged their cooperation to sustain harmony in the affected communities.

The meeting ended at about 5:20 p.m. and was widely regarded as a timely and effective measure to address long-standing conflicts.

The Ogun State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and maintaining law and order.

Residents were encouraged to remain law-abiding and report security concerns to the nearest police station.
