Rivers court to rule on bail application of father accused of defiling daughter

A Rivers State family court sitting in Port Harcourt has fixed November 27, 2025, to deliver a ruling on the bail application of Kingsley Nnanna-Obilor, accused of defiling his three-year-old daughter.

Nnanna-Obilor, who pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of defilement, had his counsel, J.U. Ugwu, apply for bail, citing ill health and other circumstances.

However, the prosecution counsel, Precious Ordu, opposed the bail application, citing the nature of the offence and the threat to the life of the accused.

The trial judge, Justice Ben Whyte, adjourned the case to November 27, 2025, for ruling on the bail application and continuation of the trial.

The decision was taken after the wife of the accused and the mother of the three-year-old victim told the court that her husband was responsible for the crime.

In an interview, Eseoghenen Aboze, Director of the Good Samaritan Foundation for Social Welfare, explained that their organisation was contacted about the matter and intervened to ensure the arrest and trial of the accused.

Aboze, who doubles as the Child and Gender Officer with Civil Society Organisations, emphasised the need for the National Assembly to expedite action towards passing further bills for defilement and rape to include the death sentence as a deterrent to offenders.

“We are calling on the National Assembly to take immediate action to pass laws that will protect our children and women from these heinous crimes. The death sentence is the only fitting punishment for such a monstrous act,” Aboze said.

In a related development, the Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 29-year-old mother of two, Chisom Okonkwo, for allegedly making false claims that her husband, Okonkwo Ozioma, defiled their two daughters.

The case followed a viral social media post on November 5, in which Chisom accused her husband of sexually assaulting their children and threatening to kill her if she revealed the incident.

Mr Okonkwo denied the allegations and requested legal representation before making any statements to the police. According to court documents, the charges against Chisom include defamation of character and giving false information to the police.

Count one of the charges reads: “That you, Chisom Okonkwo, sometime in the month of August 2024, along Adoration Junction, opposite Dan-Legal Hotel, Emene, Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did defame the character of one Okonkwo Ozioma by shouting in public that he defiled your two daughters, which has exposed him to hatred, contempt and ridicule, thereby damaging his reputation and committing an offence contrary to Section 323 and punishable under Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”

The second count reads: “That you, Chisom Okonkwo, on October 27, 2025, at the State Intelligence Department (SID), Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did give false information to police detectives that Okonkwo Ozioma defiled your two daughters, leading to his arrest and detention, knowing the information to be false, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 154(1)(a)&(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”
