Rivers govt meets labour unions, pledges commitment to welfare

The Rivers State Government has met with the leadership of organized labour unions to discuss key labour matters and reaffirm its commitment to workers’ welfare.

The meeting, held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, provided a platform for frank discussions on issues affecting workers in the state.

The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas highlighted several interventions to improve working conditions for civil servants.

These include timely payment of salaries and pensions, resolution of salary arrears for newly employed staff at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and the Judiciary, and compliance with the minimum wage for all Local Government employees.

The government has also introduced intervention buses to ease workers’ commutes and plans to expand the fleet.

Ibas, in a statement by his media aide, Hector Igbikiowubo, commended workers for their dedication to service and called for sustained partnership with labour unions to maintain industrial peace.

“This administration recognizes workers as critical partners in development. We remain committed to addressing your legitimate concerns within available resources,” he stated.

The Rivers State NLC Chairman, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, thanked the Administrator for the steps taken so far with regard to workers’ welfare and appreciated his disposition towards alleviating the transportation problem faced by workers.

The Rivers State Government assured all workers of its unwavering commitment to their welfare and urged continued dedication to service delivery for the progress of the state.

The government said it is also reviewing the implementation challenges of the Contributory Pension Scheme ahead of the July 2025 deadline and is actively considering implementing the N32,000 consequential adjustment for pensioners and clearing outstanding gratuities.
