Road accidents claim seven lives, injure two in Oyo

Three siblings tragically lost their lives yesterday in an accident along the Celica Kukumoda area of the Ife-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident occurred when a heavy truck carrying goods reportedly lost its brakes and crushed the children, who were on their way to school.

An eyewitness at the scene said the children were students heading to school at the time of the accident.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) moved the remains of the deceased to a nearby hospital, while the police maintained order at the scene to prevent any unrest.

Oyo State Sector Commander, Mary Alo, confirmed the incident, identifying the vehicle as a blue Volvo commercial truck with registration number FST449XV. She noted that the accident occurred near the RS11.35 Egbeda Unit Command at about 7:50 a.m.

“The victims were taken to Mercyland Hospital, Egbeda, where the doctor on ground confirmed all three dead, and they were subsequently moved to the hospital morgue,” she stated.

In another incident, four persons lost their lives while two others sustained injuries in a tragic crash involving two commercial vehicles at Idi-Ori on the new Ibadan/Oyo Expressway in Akinyele Local Council of Oyo State.

The injured passengers were rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for medical attention.

An eyewitness, Adekunle Adeleke, said, “The accident involved two commercial vehicles, one Volvo (yellow colour) and a DAF truck. The cause of the incident was obstruction. Six people were involved; four died on the spot, while two others were taken to UCH for treatment.”

Another witness, Taofeek Akinola, said FRSC officials and the police promptly responded to the crash scene.
