The Sokoto State Police Command have apprehended a suspected gun runner and confiscated a significant cache of firearms and ammunition during a stop-and-search operation along the Sokoto-Gusau Highway.
The arrest occurred on May 4, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m., according to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai.
The suspect, 45-year-old Murtala Abubakar from Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State, was intercepted by officers from the Tureta Police Station based on reliable intelligence.
The operation led to the discovery of four locally fabricated rifles, three locally made pistols, sixteen rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and three rounds of G3 ammunition.
Following the arrest, Abubakar was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Sokoto for further questioning.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, commended the officers involved in the operation and reiterated the police force’s commitment to addressing arms trafficking in the region.
“This operation reflects our unwavering commitment to public safety. We urge citizens to continue providing timely intelligence to aid our efforts in dismantling criminal networks,” CP Musa stated.
The Sokoto State Police Command also called on the public to continue supporting security agencies by sharing useful information, stressing the importance of community collaboration in enhancing safety.
