Soldier sentenced to death for killing girlfriend

A soldier, Adamu Mohammed, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Headquarters, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, for murdering his deceased girlfriend, Hauwa Ali.

The President of the GCM, Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Buhari, said the soldier was found guilty of murder. According to him, murder is an offence punishable under Section 106 (a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 LFN 2004.

“In the interest of societal decorum and justice for the deceased, the law had to be applied to its fullest,” said Buhari.

The Nigerian Army has detained Mohammed since April 2024 after he murdered Ali inside the Airborne and Amphibious part of the division in which he served.

Ali, his girlfriend, was discovered by the daughter of an army lieutenant around the division’s officers’ quarters.

At the time, he was rumoured to be a repented Boko Haram member, who, after his repentance, joined the Civilian Joint Task Force and was later enlisted into the Nigerian Army in the year 2021.

Amid the rumours, the Nigerian Army Spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu said the Army did not enlist repentant terrorists into its service.
