Residents of the Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Council of Delta State woke up yesterday to discover extensive damage to rail tracks caused by suspected vandals, disrupting the Warri-Itakpe train service.
Video footage showed that several rail clips had been dismantled during the early hours, raising concerns about potential accidents if the tracks are not repaired promptly.
Community members expressed fears that the damage could lead to a serious accident and urged authorities to act swiftly. They lamented the criminals’ actions and stressed the need for urgent repairs and enhanced security before train operations resume.
The residents also called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to deploy personnel to safeguard government assets along the railway corridor.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the vandalism and announced a brief service disruption.
“A vandalised railway track was reported at Agbarho and promptly investigated by track and safety officers. The stolen clips have been replaced, and the track is now safe. However, due to the incident, the WITS 01 train on May 12, 2025, will depart 40 minutes late,” the NRC stated.
