BUT for the timely intervention of the students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), an official of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) simply identified as Courage, would have been beaten to death by some irate commercial drivers in Ado Ekiti yesterday.

Some EKSU students and members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) engaged in free-for-all over the number of passengers carried by drivers when the DSS official drove into their midst.

The students were said to have protested that the drivers reduce the number of passengers on a seat to its normal three from four that they are taking.

The clash between the students and the commercial drivers, also known as Akoto, which happened in Bawa Area of Ado Ekiti, escalated into a free-for-all and caused traffic gridlock from Bawa to the university area.

Some of drivers were seen carrying clubs, cudgels and sharp objects to scare passengers and motorists plying the road. They also stopped the motorists conveying students from old garage area to the campus and ordering them out of the vehicles.
