EU, ECOWAS meet Jonathan, urge peaceful polls
WITH the preparations for the forthcoming general elections gathering momentum, the European Union Chief Observation Mission and the pEconomic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have tasked Nigerian politicians and stakeholders to work towards complying with the rules guiding the conduct of the polls.
To ensure peaceful conduct of the polls, they cautioned against hate speeches and campaigns before and after the elections.
The Chief of Observer European Union, Santiago Fisas, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadire Desire Quadreaogo, led separate delegations to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja Monday.
The two leaders in their chats with State House correspondents after the meetings stressed the need for Nigerians to abide with extant laws, even as they pledged the co-operation of their agencies with the authorities in Nigeria to ensure the successful conduct of their exercise.
Visas said his meeting with the President was a part of the consultations with all the candidates connected with the forthcoming polls, saying, “In my position, I must meet with all the candidates for these elections. I met twice with General Muhammadu Buhari and today President Jonathan very kindly accepted to receive me and my team, including the EU Ambassador, the Deputy of Observer European Union colleagues, just to have exchange of views about the elections. “
