A most families prepared to celebrate the Christmas festivities on Thursday, the camps of the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola were thrown into morning, as unknown assassins killed Mr. Jonathan Adebisi Ogundere, a key and the oldest lawyer in the defence team of the governor in the ongoing election petition. Ogundere, who was said to be in charge of the secretariat of the litigation on the April 14, 2007 election, was abducted on Christmas Eve from his country home in Oyan, Odo-Otin Council and later set ablaze by his assailants.

A statement by Lasisi Olagunju, the Special Adviser (media) and Chief Press Secretary to the governor said yesterday that the PDP lawyer was driven to a village, Igbotele, after he had been abducted by yet-to-be identified persons, who asked him to produce some documents.

The statement added that when he failed to accede to the demand of his assailants, he was reportedly set ablaze, while a rescue team later took him to the state hospital, where he died at about 3pm on Thursday.

In a swift reaction, the leadership of PDP in the state called on the police and other law enforcement agencies to fish out the culprits and bring them to justice.

A statement by the state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ademola Rasaq, urged the state police command to do a thorough job on the dastardly act, which he said might not be unconnected with dangerous politics.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the PDP said it would do everything within the law to get justice in the matter.

The late Ogundere was called to the Bar in 1970.
