UK donates rugby kits, balls to Nigeria

The British High Commission in Nigeria, on Thursday, donated rugby kits and balls to the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), reinforcing its commitment to grassroots sports development and the growth of rugby in the country.

The official handover ceremony took place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with representatives from the National Sports Commission (NSC), the NRFF, and the British High Commission in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, the Assistant Director of Coaching, Alhaji Mohammed Maigidasama, expressed gratitude to the British government for its support.

He described the donation as a significant boost to the Federation’s efforts in promoting rugby among Nigerian youths.

He said, “We sincerely appreciate this generous gesture to the Nigeria Rugby Federation, Among over 40 sports federations in the country, your decision to partner with rugby is highly commendable. We urge you to continue supporting the Federation. Rest assured, these resources will not be underutilized. We will work hard to make you proud.”

Also speaking at the event, Deputy British High Commissioner Gill Lever reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Nigeria through sports diplomacy.

She emphasised the values that rugby promotes: integrity, respect, inclusion, and unity.

Lever said, “Rugby instills values like honesty and respect, and it is a socially inclusive sport that welcomes diversity and encourages the participation of women. In societies that may face ethnic or regional divisions, sports like rugby help foster unity. The UK believes in the power of sport to build bridges, and we are proud to support Nigeria in this effort.”

Lever expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential to rise in the global rugby rankings, citing the country’s strong track record in football as an indicator of what is possible.

She added, “There’s no reason Nigeria shouldn’t be among the leading rugby nations in Africa and beyond. Just look at the success of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons. Rugby can follow that same trajectory with the right support and momentum.”

The General Manager of the NRFF, Azeez Ladipo, also expressed appreciation for the donation, noting that it will significantly enhance the Federation’s grassroots and school-level development programs.
