Nigerians in Spain, yesterday, accused the Nigerian Embassy in that country of ripping them off through the Police Character Certificate. They therefore asked President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the exercise, alleging that the proceeds from the certification go into private pockets.

The Guardian gathered that the Spanish government introduced the Police Character Certificate about seven years ago as prerequisite for Nigerians to apply for residence, nationality, enroll their children in school and have access to healthcare.

But Nigerians residing there said they have been made to undergo difficulties by the Embassy workers to get the yearly recertification, alleging that apart from the high fees charged, they only receive the documents a week or two to expiration.

President of Nigerian Nationals in Spain, Emmanuel Ani, said in Enugu that each of the 6,500 Nigerians resident in Spain was made to pay 120 euros (N62,000) annually in cash to the embassy workers to get the police recertification, explaining that it was the highest charged by any embassy in Spain.
