NUT tasks Niger on qualified teachers
NIGER State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged the state government to adopt a standard recruitment policy to avoid employment of unqualified teachers.
State NUT Chairman, Malam Ibrahim Umar, who made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, said that employing qualified teachers would improve the learning and teaching environment for both students and teachers.
“The basic priority of any government is to have an enlightened citizenry, especially the youths. We therefore need to get the right calibre of people to impart knowledge to students.”
“The state can ensure that it employed only competent teachers, not those that take up teaching as a last resort,” Umar said.
Similarly, state NUT Secretary, Labaran Garba told NAN that the union was currently holding a leadership training workshop for teachers across the three senatorial zones of the state.
He said the workshop was to train executive council members and equip them with additional leadership skills.
