FORMER president Olusegun Obasanjo visited the Ife Traditional Council yesterday urging the kingmakers of Ile- Ife,Osun state,  to respect laid down rules and procedures in the selection process and appointment of new Ooni of Ife.

Following the completion of Oba Sijuwade’s rites of passage, interested parties from across all the four ruling houses in the ancient town have been jostling to succeed the foremost traditional ruler.

But yesterday during a condolence visit to the palace, chief Obasanjo made a passionate appeal asking the kingmakers to be guided by wisdom and fear of God.

He specifically advised the kingmakers to be careful about the choice of successor to the throne in view of its importance to the Yoruba ethnic nationality and the international dimension the Ooni’s stool had attained during the reign of the late Oba Sijuwade.
According to him, the position of Ife in Nigeria today cannot be wished away adding that Ife symbolised the head of Yoruba race both in Nigeria and diaspora.

The former president also shared his experience with the chiefs on his last meeting with Oba Sijuwade 10 days before he joined his ancestors.
