Ogun Gov’t Harps on Food security, Agricultural value chain

Ogun state Government has reaffirmed its effort to food security through the state agricultural value chain and other anchor borrower schemes initiated to enhance farmers productivity in the state.

Speaking against the backdrop of many initiatives designed by the state to help farmers upscale their productivities in the state and the recent 80 Hectares Cassava Farmland production, the commissioner for Agric and food production ,Hon Bolu Owotomo disclosed that the state government had already key into the federal government programme of cash crops and food crops agenda in providing food security for the teaming population in the state and Nigeria at large.

He stated that part of the programme is to encourage youths and women to engage in farming activities as well as encourage backyard farming for food sufficiency in the state .

The commissioner for agric and food security explained that most of the interventions programmes are not designed to last forever,but initiated to scale the farmers productivity in the state.

He noted that Ogun state has the largest fish farming in the whole of west africa region noting that to enhanced their productivity and to create expansion, the present administration has provided 100 hectares of lands and also disbursed loan worth 50million naira with zero interest rate for the fish farming clusters in Eriwe fish farm settlement .

Owotomo added that some farmers in Ipokia had complained about flooding and dredging as impediment to their survival and activities and the government responded to their needs with immediate effect to ease their burden.

He further noted that under the ogun State Economic Transformation Project{OGSTEP} the state government has expanded 5.4 billion on the programme as well as purchasing scores of tractors to enhance farmers productivity in the state .

He explained that though there are silos in the state but they are not working utimaley but the government through its public private partnership is looking forward for private sector sponsors to be able revitalized and refurbished some of these silo’s in the state .

“Recall that last year federal government released over 24,000 bags of fertilizers to farmers ,this was stored in one of our storage facilities,and a lot of maize was also released to farmers as well , this was also stored in the state silo’s from where the farmers are off take it from.”

While speaking on parameters that the ministry is using to drive change, Owotomo noted that the Government through its activities is to enhance farmers value chain, elevation of farmers productivity through anchor borrower schemes as well as revitalization of all agricultural assets in the state.
