THE residents of Ayetoro community affected by the recent ocean surge in Ilaje Local Council Area of Ondo State have been assured of government’s intervention and that relief materials would be delivered to the victims soon.

This declaration was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Sola Ebiseni, who led a delegation from the ministry, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission
(OSOPADEC), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Ilaje local council
to the area.

The delegation was received by the youths of the community, who displayed several placards which read: “Ayetoro says no to sea surge; Ondo State Government save our land of birth, Ayetoro community from sea incursion,” among others, pleading for prompt intervention.

The surge, which is a recurrent disaster peculiar to the aquatic people, left many displaced, homeless and stranded on the island.

Ebiseni confirmed that the state government received a report on the natural and ecological hazard that occurred in the community which destroyed buildings, and infrastructure worth millions of naira.
According to him: “A report was sent to the governor of Ondo State and to our ministry to come and see the damage being done to the community by ocean surge.”

He added: “Nature is so precious to us and we cannot allow the ecological problem peculiar to this area to erode away the rich cultural heritage and notable civilisation of the area,” while assuring the residents of quick government intervention.

The commissioner who is the former chairman of the local council, lamented the
sordid state of the area, especially the memorial Happy City College, which, he said, has produced many illustrious sons and daughters of the land doing well in various human endeavours.

He, however, corrected the impression that the embankment contract awarded in 2003 was by the state government, saying contrarily that it was an NDDC project.

The delegation lauded the residents for their maturity and patriotic reaction for maintaining peace and order, saying disasters of lesser magnitude had to led civil strife in some parts of the Niger Delta.

The youth leader of Ayetoro community, Aralu Emmanuel implored the government to act promptly by providing relief measures and to salvage them from future reoccurrence.
