A larger population of Chinese nationals are law-abiding amid the illegal mining activities of a few, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, submitted.
During a courtesy visit to the Rutam House corporate headquarters of yesterday in Lagos, the envoy reiterated her country’s strong opposition to Taiwan’s recognition as an independent state in deference to the one-China policy widely recognised by most countries of the world. She stated that they do not oppose other countries from having trade, economic or cultural relations with Taiwan.
Yuqing, during the visit, said that in the past two years, there has been better informed reportage about Taiwan in Nigeria’s mainstream media. Her words: “About two years ago, the trade representative from Taiwan was being referred to as Ambassador of Republic of China in Nigeria, we strongly opposed such statements, as he is just a representative and cannot represent China, and there is only one China, People’s Republic of China (PRC).”
She emphasised that Africa is central to China’s diplomacy and hopes to co-exist with the United States on the continent, and not compete. On reports of some Chinese locals engaging in illegal activities like mining and wrongful labour practices, she acknowledged the wrongs but emphasised that a larger population were law-abiding citizens.
The diplomat stated that the Chinese government strongly opposes all the negative actions by some of its citizens, and supports the Nigeria Police Force in cracking down on the crimes.
According to her, both countries need to work closely to create a more secure environment for Chinese investors doing business in Nigeria, especially because of kidnapping cases recorded.
On the reports of the Chinese embassy’s role in preventing Nigerian athletes from participating in the 2025 World Relays, she said they recently submitted all their materials, as against their February submission claims.
