The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, began deliberations on a bill proposing to increase salaries of political office holders in the state.

The bill has successfully scaled its first and second readings during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The bill, titled “A Bill for a Law to further amend the Remuneration Package of Political Office Holders in Oyo State Law 2001″ was sponsored by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogomoso South).

The Bill aims to review the existing salary structure for elected and appointed officials, citing inflation, economic realities, and the need to attract and retain competent leadership as key reasons for the proposed adjustments.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, highlighted the growing financial demands on public officials, arguing that the current remuneration does not adequately reflect the cost of living or the responsibilities they shoulder.

The bill is currently undergoing its second reading where lawmakers are debating its merits more extensively.
