The Imo State Police Command has debunked a story circulating on social media, alleging that some Fulani herdsmen invaded the premises of the Owerri Correctional Centre and attacked it, freeing some inmates.
Spokesperson of the command, Henry Okoye, in a statement, said “The report is completely false.”
Okoye informed that there was neither a security breach nor an attack on the facility, stressing that the operatives of the command were looking for the perpetrators circulating the report on social media.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP, maintained that security operatives were on guard securing the facility, urging the public you dismiss the report.
“There has been no prison break, no attack, and no security breach in Imo State. The Owerri Correctional Facility remains secure, with police working alongside other security agencies to maintain peace and order across the State,” he said.
“Members of the public are urged to disregard this fake news entirely and refrain from sharing or promoting such unfounded claims. This misleading report is a deliberate attempt to incite panic, provoke ethnic tension, and mislead the public. The Command strongly condemns the spreading of such misinformation.
“The Command in synergy with other security agencies, remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.”
He urged the public to rely on the command for accurate updates, and timely information.
“For accurate and timely security updates, the public is advised to rely solely on verified information from the Police and other responsible authorities,” he said.
