A group, Bail is Free, on Monday, stormed the Delta State Police Command to protest against the alleged unlawful arrest, harassment, and detention of a professional builder, Mr. Henry Umukoro, and his colleague, Godfrey Jonah.
The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions and insisted on meeting the police commissioner, Olufemi Abaniwonda, to table their grievances.
The coordinator of the campaign, David Ugolor, alleged that the Police at the Oghara division were not professional in dealing with the arrest and detention of the two Suspects.
He also alleged that the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) attached to Oghara Police Division granted the two Suspects bail, with the payment of a “staggering sum of N500,000”.
Ugolor explained that on April 11, 2025, Jonah was arrested by the Police in Oghara, Delta State, in connection with a mob action against someone suspended of theft, but his colleague approached the Police to secure his bail, and was arrested and detained without any credible evidence linking him to the alleged crime.
“Yet, this mockery of justice did not end there. On April 18, 2025, both men were rearrested, again without a court order, and transferred to the Police headquarters in Asaba,” he said.
“It is a gross miscarriage of justice, and a chilling reminder of the systemic rot within our policing institutions where corruption thrives and liberty is traded for bribes.”
Peeved by what he called continued lawlessness and impunity, the campaign coordinator demanded the unconstitutional release of the Suspects.
The protesters also demanded an independent and transparent investigation into the “conduct of all officers involved in this abuse of power.”
Edafe appealed to the protesters to remain calm, saying the police were on the matter.
