PSC chair warns against bribes as police promotion interviews begin

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced that promotion interviews for Police Inspectors seeking elevation to the rank of unconfirmed Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP 2) will commence on Monday, May 19, 2025, across the 17 Police Zonal Command Headquarters.

The Departmental Selection Board (DSB) interview is a mandatory requirement for Inspectors aspiring for promotion to the next rank. According to the PSC, the exercise will be jointly conducted by Commission officials and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, issued a stern warning to all candidates against any form of financial inducement.

He cautioned that any officer found contributing money to influence the promotion process would face strict disciplinary action, including possible dismissal and public disgrace.

“We are aware of previous practices where candidates pooled money for officials involved in the interviews. That stops now,” DIG Argungu stated. “The Commission will not tolerate any attempt to corrupt this process. Promotion must be earned, not bought.”

He emphasized that the PSC is committed to restoring integrity and transparency to police promotions, noting that future advancement within the force will be strictly based on merit and available vacancies.

The PSC Chairman urged candidates to prepare adequately and focus on their performance before the interview panel.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to building a professional, capable, and merit-driven Police Force dedicated to securing the nation and upholding law and order.
