Senate passes South West Development Commission bill

Godswill Akpabio, Nigeria’s Senate president

The Senate on Thursday approved the South West Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024 after a third reading.

The bill’s passage followed the submission of a report by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, during plenary.

In his presentation, Senator Kaka highlighted that the bill aims to drive socio-economic growth in the South West region.

He noted that once established, the South West Development Commission would access funding from the Federation Account and development partners to address infrastructural gaps and ecological challenges.

After a clause-by-clause review of the bill, the Senate passed it for the third reading. Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, commended the committee for its work and expressed confidence that the Commission would help resolve key developmental issues in the South West.
