Minister of Communication Technology, Adebayo Shittu, yesterday confirmed that MTN Nigeria has paid N50 billion out of the N780 billion imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

This was contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Victor Oluwadamilar.

According to the minister, the amount was a down payment pending further negotiations for the payment of the outstanding fine.

The embattled telecommunication giant on Wednesday said it had paid the sum of N50 billion from the fine and had also withdrawn the legal suit it filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos against NCC over the N780 billion fine imposed on the company for failing to fully deactivate subscribers with unregistered and incomplete Subscriber Identification Modules.
