The University of Calabar has denied reports that a 400-level medical student, Mr. Mark Ofre Okwohe, was kidnapped on campus, clarifying that the institution is working with security agencies to resolve the matter.
In a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Effiong Eyo, the institution acknowledged the circulation of online reports alleging that Okwohe was abducted from within the school premises. However, preliminary findings suggest otherwise.
“As an institution which places high premium on the well-being of students, management understands that this news has raised concern among students, parents, and the general public,” Eyo stated.
According to the release, the university’s initial investigation indicates that Okwohe was last seen in his room—Room 106, Hall 2 Annex—on May 31, 2025.
Eyo noted that the incident, as alleged, did not occur within the university premises. “This is a fact the hall chairman and the student’s roommate can attest to,” he said.
Eyo further confirmed that the university has contacted security agencies and is collaborating closely to uncover the circumstances surrounding Okwohe’s disappearance. “The institution, through the office of the Acting Chief Security Officer and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, has liaised with the Police Commander, Operation Sting, and other relevant security agencies to facilitate a thorough investigation,” he said.
The student’s parents have also been contacted, and according to the university, they have provided useful statements which are now guiding the direction of ongoing inquiries.
While reassuring the university community and the public, Eyo urged calm and patience. “We urge everyone to remain calm as the investigation unfolds,” he said. “The institution will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”
He added that the University of Calabar remains committed to the safety and well-being of its students and will continue to work tirelessly toward resolving the matter.
As of press time, no further details had emerged regarding the current whereabouts of Mr. Okwohe.
