THE Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Linus Awute has said that the Warehouse-in- a -Box project on completion will help to store drugs and prevent chaotic distribution in the country.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony for the laying of blocks for the construction of a $5millon facility for pharmaceutical products by the United States government called Warehouse-in-a- Box (WIB) in Lagos, yesterday Awute noted that the national guideline stipulates that drugs do not have to be chaotically distributed.

Also, the United States Agency for `International Development’s (USAID) Mission Director, Michael Harvey said through it and in partnership with the Global Fund for AIDS,TB, and Malaria (GFATM), the American government has co-funded the construction of a state-of-the-art, pharmaceutical facility in Lagos using an innovative technology called WIB.

“Earlier this year, construction began on a similar project in Abuja at the Idu Industrial Area. The two new facilities will provide more storage space for medications and life-saving public health equipment in Nigeria, ” he stressed.

Awute said that storage of product was one important thing that is often considered.

“We don’t want to have a situation where we will continue to tolerate a chaotic drug distribution system,” he said

Accoding to him, the ministry is trying to lead by example by ensuring that drugs that are procured by the Federal Government, or donated by donors and other development partners are protected.
