Work or be privatised, board chairman warns NIPOST

From Nkechi Onyedika-Ugoeze, Abuja

Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Issac Kekemeke, has underscored the need to reform and rebrand NIPOST and make it technologically competitive to deliver effective service to Nigerians.

Speaking at a meeting with top management, general managers and state postal managers, yesterday in Abuja, Kekemeke stated that NIPOST, over the years, had been in distress, hence the need to reposition and put the agency on the path of progress.

According to him, it is imperative for NIPOST to either function effectively or get privatised “so that myself, the PMG, and a good number of you risk the loss of our jobs.”

He said: “We are working to ensure that Nigerians experience change in NIPOST. We need to change the narrative in NIPOST and know that, over time, we have disappointed Nigerians. We are ready to reposition NIPOST and put it on the path of progress, restoring trust and confidence by how we do things.”

In his remarks, the Postmaster General of the Federation (PMG), Ms Tola Odeyemi, said the management had been working hard to change the face and perception of NIPOST, adding that there was an accelerated improvement in the organisation since the appointment of the board chairman.

She noted that Nigeria was building a new unified postal management system and had digitised the e-commerce logistics, adding that a lot of people are already using NIPOST as their last-mile distribution partner.
