Kenyan paper apologises after printing Charlie Hebdo cartoon

A KENYAN newspaper apologised Thursday a day after printing a cartoon from the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo featuring the Prophet Mohammed.

The Star newspaper printed an apology after it published a “small reproduction” of the cartoon on Wednesday.

“It was published in the context of coverage of the international events following the attack,” the apology read.

“Many Muslim readers complained. The Star sincerely regrets any offence and pain caused by the picture and we will bear Muslim sensibilities in mind in future,” it said.

Some 11 percent of Kenya’s 45 million people are Muslim.

The country has suffered a wave of attacks by Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab fighters, who praised the attacks in Paris that left 17 dead as “heroic”.
