MASSOB urges Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu in honour of June 12

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has called on President Bola Tinubu to mark this year’s June 12 Democracy Day by releasing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement on Tuesday, MASSOB described the potential release as a symbolic and unifying gesture that would make the 32nd anniversary of the June 12 struggle more meaningful.

Leader of the group, Uchenna Madu, said the request reflects a longstanding demand by various pro-Biafra and civil rights groups advocating for self-determination and justice in the Southeast.

He stated that Kanu’s release would serve as a step toward national reconciliation, emphasizing that the move would demonstrate a commitment to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

“MASSOB believes that releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will pave the way for genuine dialogue aimed at addressing the longstanding grievances of the Southeast, including calls for self-determination and greater autonomy,” Madu said.

He added that the group’s demand aligns with the spirit of June 12 — a day symbolizing freedom, justice, and equity in Nigeria’s democratic history.

“Our call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release reflects the sentiments of many individuals and groups in Igboland, Nigeria, and across the world who see it as a critical step toward resolving broader political and social issues,” Madu said.

According to MASSOB, granting the request would not only improve relations between the federal government and the Southeast, but could also open channels for future dialogue with other ethnic nationalities in the country.

Madu stressed that the outcome of the appeal could be pivotal in shaping future engagements between the federal government and marginalized groups seeking justice within the Nigerian federation.
