APWEN President, Dr Adebisi Osim, emphasised this at a town & gown webinar entitled: “Engineering your future – Essential skills for employability”. She explained that bridging the gap between school and work was a key to success.
However, Osim said the truth is, in today’s world, a degree alone is not enough as the job market is evolving, as employers are looking for more than technical knowledge but problem-solvers, critical thinkers, effective communicators, and leaders.
“Engineering your future is not just studying for it, not just dreaming about it, but actively designing and building it, like true engineers. You need to master your engineering discipline, but don’t ignore skills like teamwork, communication, and adaptability.
“Engineers don’t work in isolation—we solve problems with and for people. The best engineers aren’t just good at solving problems—they anticipate them. Employers love candidates who think outside the box. So, whether it’s Artificial Intelligence (AI), renewable energy, or smart infrastructure, stay curious and keep learning,” she advised.
Osim advised young professionals to engage with mentors, build professional connections, and seek guidance, adding that internships, apprenticeships, and volunteering give real-world exposure and a competitive edge.
“The classroom gives you knowledge, but experience gives you wisdom. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. The most successful engineers didn’t start with all the answers—they kept asking the right questions,” she said.
She pointed out that APWEN is committed to supporting young engineers, especially women, in bridging the gap between school and industry, providing mentorship, training, and opportunities for them to thrive in the sector.
Osim, who doubles as a civil engineer, advised young engineers to be intentional about building their skills as the world needs engineers who don’t just have degrees but who can create solutions, lead change, and drive innovation.
Speaking at a panel session, which attracted Managing Director of Anon Gas Processing Company, Effiong Okon, Managing Director- Matrix Energy Exploration and Production Company, Dr Bukola Olusola, the Managing Director at Bahago Service, Saidu Hassan and the Director at NNPC Academy, Mrs Folasade Adekeye and moderated by Mrs Bosede Oyekunle, a past National Publicity Secretary of APWEN, the experts provided valuable insights into the essential skills required for employability in the engineering sector.
One of the highlights of the forum was a quiz competition, where six young engineers and students emerged winners and received cash prizes of N10,000. Also, internship opportunities were announced for civil engineering students and graduates.
