Former Super Eagles’ Goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, has urged the national team coaches and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to start looking for a replacement for the country’s current number one goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, to ensue no vacuum is created when the Lille of France’ number decides to leave the scene.

Enyeama has been Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper since he made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2002. Apart from a brief moment in 2008 when he was dropped to the bench by German coach, Berti Vogts, Enyeama has been in goal in all of the country’s major international championships till date.

Agu, who believes that like every good thing Enyeama’s era would soon come to an end, says grooming a successor for the former Enyimba captain would ensure that the Super Eagles would not suffer much when that time comes.

The former national team captain admits that getting a capable successor to Enyeama would be a Herculean task, but he charges young Nigerian goalkeepers to see it as a challenge that must be accomplished through hard work and by studying the skills that made the Eagles’ captain one of the best goalkeepers in Africa in recent times.

He also tasks Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi and his assistants, to comb the Nigeria Premier League for goalkeepers that would be groomed for the national team, adding that most of those outside the country don’t have much time left in their career.

“Keshi and his assistants need to focus on getting a suitable replacement for Enyeama now that he seems not to have much time to stay with the team.

Enyeama is a talented goalkeeper, who has saved Nigeria from embarrassments in crucial matches and any goalkeeper that wants to take his place should learn his skills.

“Enyeama has spent much time with the senior national team and I believe the next generation of keepers seeking to be successful like him need to emulate his virtues. It is not an easy task, but with determination and clearly set programme we can get good quality goalkeepers to fight for his position,” he said.
