Nigerian referee Yemisi Eunice Akintoye has been named among the 18 officials selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
CAF confirmed Akintoye’s appointment following her successful completion of a series of preparatory and fitness assessments held in Cairo, Egypt.
A certified FIFA referee since 2020, Akintoye is a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council and has previously officiated at the CAF Women’s Champions League and West African Football Union (WAFU) tournaments.
Her inclusion in the elite panel of officials marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s representation in continental football, particularly in officiating roles.
Reacting to the development, officials from the Nigeria Football Federation praised Akintoye’s selection as a reflection of the country’s growing stature not only in women’s football performance but also in officiating excellence.
Her role at WAFCON 2024 comes as the Super Falcons of Nigeria prepare to compete in Group B against Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
