Dere, Awiaka win Aniya, Atuk retirement tournament

Dr. Anselem Dere and Princess Nkeiruka Awiaka were at their golfing best last weekend when they won the men’s and ladies’ titles respectively of the Umaru Aniya and Timothy Atuk retirement golf tournament held at the Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS) golf course.

It was a mixture of music, good food and wine, as well as the best the best of golf at the event organized by the retiring players’ Committee of Friends and golfers in conjunction with NNPC Medical Service and BCGS.

Dr. Dere played a net score of 72 to emerge winner ahead of Esosa Ogbomo, who settled for the second position through count back over Sam Awiaka, having both played 73 net respectively. Osaze Iyare won his usual best gross award with 79 gross.

Princess Awiaka, the club’s former Lady Captain, was at her best again with 72 net, which got her a second trophy within two weeks, just as another former lady captain, Debby Otabor played 77 net for second place ahead of the incumbent lady captain, Princess Habiibah Oyeghe Oyarekhua with 79 net.

At the end of the action on the course, dignitaries at the event, including the Vice captain of the club, Mayer Ologbosere, Dr. James Agada, who represented Dr. Musa Shaibu, Managing Director, NNPC Medical Services Limited, Dr. Dakop Yoila, and many others showered encomiums on the retirees for their exemplary service to the organisation and BCGS.

Other winners at the event were Dr. John Ogbeide, who won the men’s super veteran category with 78 net, R. Osahon, who beat M. Azugbene on count back having both played 77 net in the men’s veteran event, and Lucy Onoabhagbe, who won the ladies veteran with net score of 79.

The highlight of the event was presentation of trophies to winners. The club’s vice captain also presented Queen Idia bronze cast to the two retirees for their roles in enhancing golf development in the club.

At the end of the event, Aniya and Atuk expressed their appreciation to the club for organising ‘such a wonderful golf tournament’ on their behalf. They said it showed how united members of the golf family were by honouring them with the tournament that attracted almost 100 golfers from across Nigeria.
